What makes river cruising different

River ships are narrow, intimate, and designed for inland waterways. They often dock close to historic centers, making it possible to walk into town rather than spend time transferring from a distant commercial port.

Life onboard

The destination is the main event. Expect fewer entertainment venues and less nightlife than on a large ocean ship, but more scenery, lectures, regional food, and conversation. Many itineraries include a guided excursion in each port, with active or slower-paced options on some lines.

Important tradeoffs

Cabins and public spaces are generally smaller, itineraries can be affected by high or low water, and accessibility varies because ships may raft side-by-side and gangways can be steep. The line, river, season, and cabin deck all matter.

QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING

Before you choose.

Select a question to see our guidance.

How active do you want the included touring to be?

River lines may offer gentle walking, standard, active, cycling, or special-interest tours. We review the specific itinerary because choices and mobility requirements vary by sailing.

Would you enjoy a quiet evening atmosphere?

River ships generally have conversation, local entertainment, lectures, or music rather than casinos and large productions. That is ideal for some travelers and too quiet for others.

Is a balcony important, or would a French balcony work?

A French balcony opens the room to fresh air but has no exterior sitting area. A true balcony offers outdoor space but may reduce interior room size. River views are available from many public areas either way.

Do you want a land extension before or after the cruise?

An extension adds depth and makes international airfare more worthwhile. It is especially useful for cities or regions the river itinerary only touches briefly.
